This is why in recent times, and at other times when the divine origin and correctness of its interpretation are questioned, the Church undertakes its defense and protection with great zeal and care.
Divino afflante spiritu | encyclical by Pius XII |
Pope Pius sets forth to expound the content of Spifitus Deus and to defend them. He first of all posits, as contained in the in the above mentioned encyclical letter, that there is no error if the sacred writer, speaking of the things of the physical order, went by what sensibly appeared.
He continues by saying that the sacred writer is not also to be taxed with error if copyists have aflfante a mistake or the real meaning of a passage remains ambiguous and finally, that it is absolutely wrong and forbidden to narrow inspiration to certain passages of the Holy scripture or to admit that the sacred writer has erred as it is impossible that God, the fivino Truth, can utter that which is not true.
The Holy Father makes a clarion call here, as he proclaims the above teaching of his predecessor, urging all afflahte adhere to it religiously. Concerning what should obtain in the present day, he makes an addition by inculcating obedience to the above counsels and exhortations.
Following the founding, by Pope Leo XIII, of affante counsel of eminent men whose duty was to ensure that the sacred texts received thorough exposition and were kept safe, other Predecessors of Pope Pius XII made contributions to this regard.
Pope Pius X enacted a law concerning the method of scripture studies in clerical seminaries and also founded the Pontifical Biblical institute. Pope Pius XI decreed that no one should receive a benefice having attached the canonical obligation afflabte expounding the Sacred Scripture unless he had obtained the licentiate or doctorate in biblical science.
Pope Pius X commended the society of St.
Divino afflante spiritu
Jerome and exhorted them to continue their good works of promoting and facilitating the custom dlvino reading and meditating on the Holy Gospel. He also mentions Pope Benedict XV who exhorted all the children of the church, to reverence the Holy Scriptures by reading and meditation on it constantly as it contains the food that nourishes the spiritual life unto perfection.
Apart from the help rendered by the above mentioned successors towards the good use of the bible, there are the many students of the Holy Scriptures who impart in the younger clergy the afflqnte they have acquired. Many of them have edited the sacred text; others have expounded, explained and translated it to the vernacular.
Pope Pius X here includes the conditions for biblical studies as investigation by means of excavation and the use of papyri. The former helps in the knowledge of languages, letter, events, customs, and forms of worship of the ancient times while the latter has contributed to the discovery of letters and institutions of the time of our saviour.
He also mentions the spirit that is required for the task of interpreting the bible which include first, the recommendation by the fathers of the church that scholars should study the ancient languages and should have recourse to the original texts. He posits that the explanation of the sacred books can be done with the use of language and literary criticism. Concerning what is the case at the present era, he says diviho textual criticism is used because it purifies the sacred text from all kinds afflantee mistakes.
The Holy Father implores the catholic exegetes to expound and discover the genuine meaning of the sacred Books so as to discern and define clearly its literal meaning. In this encyclical letter, the exegetes are instructed to disclose and expound the significance of the Gospel message carefully without proposing other figurative senses as the genuine meaning of the Sacred Scripture.
They should make use of the works of the Holy fathers, doctors of the church and renowned interpreters of past ages for the accomplishment of this task.
This will bring a union between the ancient authors and the maturer knowledge of the modern interpreters with new progress in the field of Divine letters. Concerning the meaning of exegesis and aids to exegesis in our age, mention is made of Catholic theologians saying that they have been able to examine and explain the nature and effects of biblical inspiration more exactly and fully than in the previous years.
The interpreters are therefore urged to endeavour to determine the peculiar characteristics and circumstance, the mentality, manner of reasoning and expression, as well as manner of narrating and writing of the ancient sacred writers. This is in line with the rule of interpretation which is to discover and define what the writer intends to express. This is why he advises that the faithful should not lose courage when problems surface today, that they should be courageous knowing full well that new beginnings grow little by little and fruits are fivino after many labours.
Based on this also, the faithful are admonished to make free and holy use of the sacred books in order that it instructs them to salvation by the faith which is in Christ Jesus. The bishops, at this juncture, are advised to support by means of finance, associations that spread copies of the Gospel, to recommend the use of translated version of the Sacred Books in homes and to give public conferences on biblical subjects or have capable hands do it on their behalf.
The bishops are also encouraged to see to it that while still in the Seminary, the priests do not lack what is needed to help them imbibe a practical and enduring love for the Sacred Scriptures. The afflqnte of Sacred Scriptures in the seminaries should on their part teach the course perfectly and imbue the students with love for the same.
In the end, the Holy Father urges the faithful to be nourished with the knowledge of the Bible and the love of God which will lead them to eternal perfection.
He desires for all sons of the church to continually meditate on the divine word so that they may taste as their reward how good and sweet the spirit of the Lord is. Remember me on this faflante.

Frye offers, in addition, challenging and stimulating ideas for the teaching of literature at lower school levels, designed both to promote an early interest and to lead imaginatoon student to the knowledge and kaleidoscopic experience found in the study of literature.
Frye’s proposals for the teaching of literature include an early emphasis on poetry, the “central and original literary form,” intensive study of the Bible, as literature, and the Greek and Latin classics, as these embody all the great enduring themes of nofthrop man, and study of the great literary forms: Paperbackpages. I was thinking nervously of starting university in a northdop months, altogether doubtful of my worthiness to pursue an English degree, and this caught my eye.
I knew nothing, or at least believed I did — or was afraid to believe in my grasp of anything at all. My, my, aren’t we a gung-ho little English I found you by chance, my darling, on one of those voracious raids I make on Chapters when lucky enough to get near a city with one.
Northrop Frye – The Educated Imagination
My, my, aren’t we a gung-ho little English major? So I picked you up, slim volume that you are, and read you over a series of happy, early-morning book-with-coffee sessions. Imaginatiob kept notes while I read through you, silly notes of what was truly a mind-stretching lecture so valuably committed to paper. Immature as I was, you shaped me and deserve the truth, wonderful little book.
This tribute cannot be enough, but here is a selection of what I was thinking about you. I’ve read the first chapter through twice, and comprehended that much more for the extra reading. This is, hopefully, just ecucated I need to reaffirm and elaborately develop my knowledge of how important literature It makes so much sense.
Ikagination am familiar with, amorous for that sense of connection northhrop the entire world I’ve always had this sense that most of the ‘great’ imaginatoon are hopeless ones, and that if I lived a blessed and optimistic life, it seemed less and les likely onrthrop I could become a ‘person of literature. We write of our dark times, and of the hope that we may rise above them to be happy again Of course, when you think about it, the latter implies far more intention. If a child’s games or tales hold symbolic elements that are also within literary convention The writer designsspecifically for the purpose of — what?
Well, I guess that’s what I’m reading this for To decipher Finnegan’s Wake. To read the Bible. Kind of makes me feel a tad nauseous. Damn, will I ever get to read these things? I expect the same would go for The Iliad and The Odyssey It’s today, it’s meit’s us. Yet I cannot wait to start reading this book again. The answers are here, for me: I hold them in this slim volume that was written forty-seven years ago and I could cry once again, with gratitude and relief and imagibation transformative power of new-discovered insight.
I know what’s been unproductive over my months of struggling with spirit and mind. And I am beginning to know what to do next.

This book is his six lectures, and if you’re hoping for a review as intelligent as this book is, you’ve come to the wrong person.
The Educated Imagination
Frye tackles many questions which revolve around the importance of studying literature and an analysis of literature, studying it, and having an imagination. He posits three kinds of language within a language – that of ordinary conversation and self-expression; of conveying information in a practical sense; and of the imagination, i.
That’s overly simplified and there’s no doubt a better way of summing it up, but that’s what I’ve come up with. Naturally, arguments build one upon the other, and I would be setting myself a horrendous task to try to describe them in brief.
It’s just not possible, as the lectures cover a great deal. You’d be better to read the book itself. Of all the lectures, I appreciated the last one the most, probably because it spoke to me the most. At one point he discusses freedom, and says “Nobody is capable of free speech unless he knows how to use language, and such knowledge is not a gift: What he doesn’t say, but what he’s saying, is that it’s incredibly important for the lower classes to be well educated.
With education comes not just the ability to express yourself articulately but to really see the world around you, and understand it. This is something that draws me to education, especially for the working class.
The other thing I loved about this lecture was how he validates having and using our imaginations, not relegating them to the realm of fantasy or child’s play. He reveals how we use our imaginations constantly, how necessary the imagination is to everything, and how “literature speaks the language of the imagination, and the study of literature is supposed to train and improve the imagination.
At times his arguments read a little dated, but one in particular stands out, especially as it connects to the study of Dickens, which was what I was reading at the time, and helps me to understand why novels like A Week of This Nathan Whitlockwhich I read recently, don’t have the same effect.
Reading Great Expectations you come across a great many of these characters, from Estella to Miss Havisham to the convict. Even Joe and Mrs Joe. They’re almost like caricatures of themselves.
When you meet such a character as Micawber in Dickens, you don’t feel that there must have been a man Dickens knew who was exactly like this: Our impressions of human life are picked up one by one, and remain for most of us loose and disorganized.
But we constantly find things in literature that suddenly co-ordinate and bring into focus a great many such impressions, and this is part of what Aristotle means by the typical or universal human event. He has some good arguments that, re-worded, could work on the typical high school student.
I’m not absolutely sure how much I agree, with his reasoning at least, but it’s true that our culture and society is founded on such works and continues to influence them without our even realising or noticing – to be able to clearly see our world in such a way would take a lifetime of study.
I don’t think that the common way of throwing Macbeth in the faces of fifteen-year-olds works at all; in fact, it has a detrimental effect. The problem is that most English teachers don’t get or like Shakespeare either – it’s a cycle.
While Frye is a terrible name-dropper and obviously knows – knew – his shit, he sometimes reads like a stuffy academic who annoyingly links everything back to the Bible. That’s not a bad thing, except it comes across as a bit narrow – you get caught up in his arguments, which are well-expressed in general, and suckered into his way of thinking.
The margins are littered with my comments and thoughts and counter-questions – this is a book you need to read armed with a pencil. There are lots of great quotes, and it’s very readable, even if you don’t have a background in English Lit. I recommend it to teachers and readers and the general populace alike, because it is very interesting and presents a solid argument for the validity of studying English lit – and writing literature in the first place – which I wish our politicians would appreciate.

I confess I was a little intimidated by the idea of talking about the different hormones and how they affect the body as a system. I was nervous that Vrazzled wouldn’t understand what was going on. Quite the opposite, I’m fah to say. I understood everything they talked about–easily. If you have problems with your thyroid, adrenals, or reproductive hormones, or if you have been st Aside from the excellent information, the thing I appreciated most about this book was how easy it was fxt understand.
If you have problems with your thyroid, adrenals, frazlzed reproductive hormones, or if you have been straggling along with excessive weight, or your memory just won’t hold onto anything, or you feel stressed out really fast, and your doctor hasn’t been able to figure out what is wrong with youit would be worth giving this book a feelinh.
Now I understand so much more clearly the interplay of my hormones. And, I discovered that even though I know I have hypothyroidism, the glands that have been giving me the feeljng problem lately are my adrenals. As the authors a husband and wife team explained the process that leads to adrenal burnout, I found myself seeing last month and this month with sudden clarity and understanding. Yes, I had od out like a star–a burst of energy to get the spring term ready, and then. From which I can’t seem to recover.
I had been blaming my thyroid out of habit. But as I read and talked about the book with some key people, I realized that actually, I had whomped my adrenals. So, now I am taking steps to help resurrect them.
I’m also seeing my entire life with a frazzked understanding. Now I know why I was so exhausted as an adolescent and teen and at the end of my missionary serviceand why I got sick all the time. My adrenals were burned out. Okay, so what does the book tell you besides how to understand the interplay of the different hormones? For each endo-type thyroid, adrenal, or reproductivethey give detailed information about the recommended diet, exercise, and other elements including things to avoid and whyalong with the supplementation and other therapies you can use to help that particular gland.
In the later chapters where they talk about maintenance rather than “jump starting”they even address things like flower essences, color therapy, meditation, etc. Throughout the book, the authors also emphasize over and over again how important it is to take things slowly. Try one thing at a time and see if it helps, and then frazzlled the next thing.
Feeling Fat, Fuzzy, or Frazzled? Find out why!
They also advocate keeping a record of what you’re working with and how it’s going. The efeling of the book has a series of appendices that talk about how to order home tests to determine hormone levels in your body tissue, where to find good supplements, how to talk with your doctor to get the best treatment, how to find good doctors and other therapists, etc. Again, this is an easy read I read it in one daypacked with excellent information that will help you get on your way to feeling better.

Some good information, but I’m not quite ready to sink hundreds of dollars into lab tests that would require me finding a new physician just to order them. Good list of supplements that can help in different area Thryoid, adrenals, sex hormones.

You might as well try to solve kr medical problems by reading the horoscope. Sep 22, Heather added it Shelves: I have mixed feelings about this book so far. First, it is very easy to understand. It is written in a clear, concise manner almost too homey without dumbing things down. There are a lot of case studies and personal examples which really help clarify things. On the downside, you really have to get the testing done in order to find the appropriate treatment plan.
So it’s your I have mixed feelings about this book so far.
So it’s your own money through a private lab. Because the recommendations differ based on which system is most out of whack, you sort of frazzledd the test results. I was hoping for something that I’d be able to do without spending loads of money. The self-test revealed ft it’s inconclusive which fdeling my systems ot most messed up! I’ll keep reading though and see what I can figure out.
I really don’t want to feel fat or fuzzy or frazzled!!!!! Updated March – I’m shelving this for a while or at least until I decide whether to move forward with the tests or not. Sep 16, Leslea rated it it was amazing Shelves: Basic overall information about endocrinology is about the same as the Mary Shomon book, but this book is organized by which type of hormonal balance you may be experiencing fat, fuzzy, or frazzled?
Particularly, I like the information on alternative testing and resources, and the very concise checklists in the back of each chapter. I was able to read this in an hour after dinner to find what I need to do next.

If you haven’t been diagnosed with thyroid disease, you will find the self-quizzes very helpful. Even though I have worked within a diagnosis for 13 years, I still found the information on the “three legged stool” of hormonal balance to be interesting.

Desiree Kabayn has learned from the best. At thirteen, her parents sold her to a common thief Hubert Kabayn for the money. He is abusive and often cruel at times, but he is the only person she can rely on.
So, she is surprised when he sends her off on a wild goose chase, only to discover when she returns, that he is about to be hanged for murder right before her very eyes.
Watching him hang from the gallows, Desiree vows to clear his name and avenge his death. Nicolas Grimshaw enforces the law. As the local shire-reeve, he has the difficult job of hunting down the truth from criminals. Known by the locals as the grim reaper he sraah often accused to using unconventional methods to get a confession, or to solve a case.
Loathed and feared because of the title he holds, people make a wide girth around him, when they see him coming. She follows Nicolas home with intention of killing him. So when she sneaks upon Nicolas and attacks him, he is at first surprised by the assault by the beautiful young woman determined on doing him bodily damage. He soon figures out that this is the woman he has promised to look out for. So instead of arresting her for the assault, he restrains her and takes her to the graveyard to help her lay Hubert to rest.
She is astounded by his help burying Hubert and his offer of money to get her through the winter. When Nicolas comes across Desiree six days later participating in an illegal game, he practically blackmails her to be his servant. Furious that he is making her serve him, she does some very funny things to get even with him. As the days pass she realizes that Nicolas is good man, albeit a lonely one. Will they find the real killer? I liked they way the characters evolved together learned to trust and love on another.
I also, liked that there wasn’t the “big misunderstanding” too. View all 3 comments. Aug 26, Katrina Passick Lumsden rated it it was ok.
El Rincon del Romanticismo: Lisa Marie Rice – Serie Dangerous (Erótica)
So many stupid things are done at the pfligrosos of this book that it killed any enjoyment I took in the story prior to that point. Most romances, thanks to dear old Aunt Jane and her spiritual goddaughter Georgetteare set in the regency era, with a focus on the upper middle and upper class as the main characters.
So it was refreshing to see a romance set in a very much under-represented time, and with people who are on the fringe of society instead of perching at the top of it.
Unfortunately, not much is DONE with this new setting and new stratum of society. The book still hits all the common romance beats you would expect it to, with little straying from mfkerrigan well-worn path. Basically, this is a romance that does exactly what it needs to do, but unfortunately does not rise peligrosox its genre despite its new setting and closer eye at a different social set.
It wasn’t quite a “wallpaper” romance, but it was closer than I had hoped. If you enjoy romance novels in general, you will find this a well-written and satisfying one, with a new setting to bewos things somewhat fresh.
A worthy romance, but had the opportunity to be much more. Oct 27, Lisa Shea rated it it was amazing Shelves: I love this author’s books in general and Danger’s Kiss in particular is spectacular. You grow to care for them immediately, and get drawn into the world they inhabit.

Now her protector has been hung and she is out for revenge. She’s good with a dagger and not at all afraid to use it. Nicholas Grimshaw is the shire-reeve who was forced to do the hanging, but he had doubts about the old man’s guilt. Now he’s saddled with his promise to watch out for the woman, at least for a little while.
What follows is simply wonderful. So many times in stories the heroines do completely idiotic things for plot reasons. And that’s not to say that Desiree is perfect – she makes human mistakes. But when a threat appears, she realizes it, considers her options, and goes for the wise one most of the time. I could only wish most authors created heroines like this. It’s so much more satisfying than screaming at a book “no you stupid fool, why are you doing that???
You can see exactly why he is the way he is, exactly why he makes his decisions, and you can feel for him. It is a joy to read. The many little touches are brilliant.
El Rincon del Romanticismo: Jane Feather – Serie V
Clearly the author did her research, weaving in food choices, cooking techniques, clothing, and much more. You get a rich sense of the medieval world without it turning into a dry tome. There were minor issues with the point of view sliding at times, but that seems to happen in most books. Also, my one complaint would be that in one section Nicholas scoffs because men are in love with a woman who is “a bit plump and pox-scarred”.
OK, she’s a bit plump, so therefore she’s hideous? In fact, he thinks “he supposed there was naught more attractive to lads of that age than a lass who would tell them aye, and that was likely her charm”.
OK so a woman who is a bit plump, and has a few dents on her face, has to put out in order to be liked. I resist statements like that: Aren’t women much more than that? And does that mean if Desiree puts on a little weight and recovers from the pox that he’ll dump her, unless she continues to put out for him?
Still, that was my only gripe in a book which is rich in warmth, detail, and emotion. Jan 06, Christine rated it liked it Shelves: She’s a quick witted and lively beautiful young woman.
