Johan Vincent Galtung born 24 October is a Norwegian sociologistmathematicianand the principal founder of the discipline of peace and conflict studies.
He also established the Journal of Peace Research in In he was appointed to the world’s first chair in peace and conflict studies, at the University of Oslo. He resigned his Oslo professorship in and has since held professorships at several other universities; from to he taught as Distinguished Professor of Peace Structiral at the University of Hawaiiand he is currently based in Kuala Lumpurwhere he is the first Tun Mahathir Professor of Global Peace gheory the International Islamic University Malaysia.
Galtung is known for contributions to sociology in the s, political science in the s, economics and history in the s, macrohistoryanthropologyand theology taltung the s. He has developed several influential theories, such as the distinction between positive and negative peacestructural violencetheories on conflict and conflict resolutionthe concept of peacebuilding the structural theory of imperialismand the theory of the United States as simultaneously a republic and an empire.
Galtung has been a major intellectual figure of the New Left since the s. Galtung was born in Oslo. He earned the cand. PhD degree in mathematics at the University of Oslo inand a year later completed the mag.

PhD degree in sociology at the same university. Galtung’s father and paternal structufal were both physicians. The Galtung name has its origins in Hordalandwhere his paternal grandfather was born. Upon receiving his mag. He served as the institute’s director untiland saw the institute develop from a department within the Norwegian Institute of Social Research into an independent research institute with enabling funds from the Norwegian Ministry of Education.
He then served as the director general of the International University Centre in Dubrovnikalso serving as the president of the World Future Studies Federation. Galtung is a prolific researcher, having made contributions to many fields in sociology. He has published taltung than articles and over books.
The chair is supported by the Perdana Global Peace Foundation and is named for its founder and chairman, Malaysia’s fourth prime minister Mahathir Mohamad. The aim of the chair is to “create greater awareness, promotion and advocacy of global peace including the protection of human rights and criminalization of war.
By he gaaltung already a committed peace mediator, and elected to do 18 months of social service in place of his obligatory military service. After 12 months, Galtung insisted that the remainder of his social service be spent in activities relevant to peace, to which the Norwegian authorities responded thsory sending him to prison, where he served six months. Because Galtung’s academic research is clearly intended to promote peace, ingaotung mediating in Charlottesville, his sociological work shifted toward more concrete and constructive peace mediation.
A Peace Development Environment Network, an organization for conflict transformation by peaceful means. There are four traditional but unsatisfactory ways in which conflicts between two parties are handled:.
Galtung tries to break with these four unsatisfactory ways of handling a conflict by finding a “fifth way”, where both A and B feel that they win, when both give in expecting nothing but peace. This method also insists that basic human needs — such as survival, physical well-being, liberty, and sturctural — be respected.
Galtung first conceptualized peacebuilding by calling for systems that would create sustainable peace. The peacebuilding structures needed to address the root causes of conflict and support local capacity for peace management and conflict resolution.
Galtung has held several significant positions in international research councils and has been an advisor to several international organisations. He has also written many empirical and theoretical articles, dealing most frequently with issues of peace and conflict research.
His work is distinguished by his unique perspective as well as the importance he attributes to innovation and interdisciplinarity. He is one of the authors of an impwrialism account of news values which are the factors which determine what coverage is given to what stories in the news. Galtung also originated the concept of Peace Journalismwhich is increasingly influential in communications and media studies.
He has also distinguished himself in public debates concerning, among other things, less-developed countries, defence issues, and the Norwegian EU debate. In he was given the Right Livelihood Award.
Economist and fellow peace researcher Kenneth Boulding has said of Galtung that his “output is so large and so varied that it is hard to believe that it comes from a human”. For Johan Galtung, the US is simultaneously a republic and an empirea distinction he believes is highly relevant. The US is on one hand loved for its republican qualities, and on the other loathed by its enemies abroad for its perceived military aggressions.
Its republican qualities include its work ethic and dynamism, productivity and creativity, the idea of freedom, or liberty, and a pioneering spirit. On the other hand, its military and political manipulation are censured for their aggressiveness, arrogance, violence, hypocrisy and self-righteousness, as well as the US public ignorance of other cultures and extreme materialism.
InGaltung criticised the “structural fascism” of the US and other Western countries that make war to secure materials and markets, stating: In an article published inGaltung predicted that the US empire will “decline and fall” by Successors, Regionalization or Globalization?
Johan Galtung – Structural Theory of Imperialism | Abdullatif El Ali –
However, the decline of the US empire did not imply a decline of the US republic, and the “relief from the burden of Empire control and maintenance Elaborating on the radio and television program Democracy Nowhe stated that he loved the American republic and hated the American empire. He added that many Americans had thanked him for this statement on his lecture tours, because it helped them resolve the conflict between their love for their country and their displeasure with its foreign policy.
Since the fall of the Soviet UnionGaltung has made several predictions of when the United States will no longer be a superpowera stance that has attracted some controversy.
In an article published inhe lists 14 ‘contradictions’ that would cause the ‘decline and fall’ of the US empire. He claims the election of George W. Bush cost the US empire five years — although he admits that this estimate was set a bit arbitrarily. He now sets the date for the end of the American Empire atbut not the American Republic. During the course of his career, some of Galtung statements and views have drawn criticism, most notably his criticism of western countries during and after the Cold Imperilaism and what his throry perceived as a positive attitude to the Soviet UnionCuba and Communist China.
Both authors criticized Galtung’s opinion that while Communist China was “repressive in a certain liberal sense”, Mao Zedong was “endlessly liberating when seen from many other perspectives that liberal theory has never understood” because China showed that “the whole theory about what an ‘open society’ is must be rewritten, probably also the theory of ‘democracy’—and it will take a long time before the West will be willing to view China as a master teacher in such subjects.
The Israeli newspaper Haaretz accused Galtung in May of antisemitism for: Galtung has published more than a thousand articles and over a hundred books. From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. BrewerPeace processes: Retrieved 4 April Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters.

With a particular focus on obsession and the abnormal, We So Seldom Look On Love explores life at its quirky extremes, pushing past limits of convention into lives that are fantastic and heartbreakingly real. Whether writing about the dilemma of a two-headed man who attempts to expunge his own pain, the shock of a woman who discovers she has married a transsexual, the erotic delusions of a woman who repeatedly exposes her body to an unknown glwdy, or the bizarre predilections of a female necrophile a story made into the acclaimed motion picture, “Kissed”Gowdy convinces us with incisive detail, only to disarm us with black humor.

Not all these stories are about love but they all display unusual human relationships with some “unusual” people. There’s a story about a woman learning that her husband was actually born a woman, a story about a man with two heads who tries to murder his other head, another about a female exhibitionist, and another about a girl who has toddler-sized legs on her torso her Siamese twin.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading these short st I thoroughly enjoyed this one.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading these short stories. They were very quirky with some humour thrown in. It was a very shocking and explicit story, though written very well. View all 7 comments. I first read this book many, many moons ago.
It is the book that I’ve always pointed to when justifying my opinion that Barbara Gowdy “always” writes about unusual, weird characters. All of those have served to confirm my original opinion. So you’d think I would have been more than prepared for a second foray into Gowdy’s macabre territory in this book of stories. Even on a second reading, I was t I first read this book many, many moons ago. Even on a second reading, I was totally unsettled by these stories. These are not stories to gulp down in one sitting.
Indeed, I had to put the book down and do some “normal person” things in the middle of reading “The Two-headed Man”. I almost had to do the same with the title story, “We So Seldom Look on Love” about a female necrophile, so repulsed was I, except that at the same time I was entirely fascinated. But Gowdy does not let you do this. She forces you to look and then tenderly and humorously makes them human for you as if they were your next-door neighbour or, even, you.
Nov 12, Denis rated it it was amazing. Like her novels, we see her championing the misfits and outcasts and explore their worlds in an honest and sympathetic fashion. Regardless of how outlandish her protags appear to be This book is one the few short story collections I plan on rereading, in order to check out how the author pulls off these wonderful stories, and to revisit her intriguing characters.
It’s a great read. May 29, Dorothyanne Brown rated it it was amazing. You read something by Barbara Gowdy and you realize you are completely inferior and nothing you do will ever make you better enough. These are short stories, horrifying short stories, prizewinners all. They are all about people who have an oddness about them – a conjoined twin bit attached, an extra big head, deformities of all kinds and degrees of hardships. And I love every one of the characters.
I bleed for them. The poor girl whos Wow. The poor girl whose mother loved the legs of her twin better than she loved the whole girl, the girl whose friend has a purple suitcase by the door in case of an event Gowdy is so good at telling these stories that they didn’t feel prurient, even though some of the people in them had non-benign interest in the characters.

Buy it loge your bookshelf. And whenever you feel like sitting down and writing a book, reread it, and then go have some wine. Apr 12, Christy Stewart rated it it was amazing Shelves: There are fantastic stories in here like the beautiful necrophiliac or the two headed man personifying good and evil, but my favorite story was the one about the foster children.
Gowdy told the story in a beautiful and loving way that made it far more arresting then other pieces I’ve read like it in which the authors try to be shocking.
Nov 18, Karin Slaughter rated it it was amazing. I especially loved the story about the female necrophile, which was a tender, heartbreaking love story. When folks ask me if there’s anything I won’t write about, I think of this story, because Gowdy has proven that a good writer can write about anything.
May 20, Kamalendu Nath rated it really liked it. If you are looking for a smart, intelligent human sexual drama in ordinary realms with a satisfactory conclusion — this book is not for you. Body and Soul, Challenges the sanity of an elderly grandmother Aunt Bea in foster home for young girls; If you are looking for a smart, intelligent human sexual drama in ordinary realms with a satisfactory conclusion — this book is not for you.
Body and Soul, Challenges the sanity of an elderly grandmother Aunt Bea in foster home for young girls; we meet Julie epileptic seizure; waiting for mommy in jail as a companion to Terry Penny who is bald, blind and has a damaging birthmark and later Angela missing both arms: Sylvie, is gifted with memory retention but burdened with a Siamese twin, Sue, from belly down; goes through her own adventure growing up, encounters love and a twin sexual encounter, is to loose Sue – on which she is conflicted.
Ninety-three Million Miles Away, is the story of Ali who has quit a boring job and is looking for affirmation of self-desirability, worth, beauty through her own sex in the presence of a silent witness, Claude, the cosmetic surgeon.
Lizards, craving sex for hunger is distinguished from craving companionship in the form of a true Love. We So Seldom Look on Love, another challenging tale involving sexuality of a bizarre nature is where the love underlies a total, really a total, submission.
I wish I could give this more than five stars. This collection of short stories blew me away. Normally there are one or two stories in a collection that ‘grab’ me, but every single one of these short stories is one that I want to reread.
The characters are haunting and disturbing and fascinating. And I just can’t stop thinking about them. Oct 25, Beth Follett rated it it was amazing. May 12, Erik rated it liked it Shelves: We So Seldom Look on Love is a collection of 8 short stories featuring: All told with truth and with compassion, painting even the necrophiliac in a sympathetic light.
It’s really no surprise that so many reviews describe this collection as “disturbing. There exists in the heart of humankind a disease, a conservative, conformist notion of ‘normalcy’ that serves the very useful function of unifying disparate desires and thought patterns into a singular, cooperative mindset capable of achieving great things.
We so seldom look on love: stories – Barbara Gowdy – Google Books
Peer pressure, in short, which helps everyone be on the same page but also demonizes ideas and persons exotic from us. How can you hate someone for being a homosexual? Why in God’s name would you seek to sso such a person from marrying their loved one?
Why would you bully someone for looking or speaking or being different? Do you not have the free will to choose what is right? I mean, who wants others to be the same as you? Who wants ae be the same as others? Who will allow some celebrity, preacher, or government official to define your fashion, your ideas, barrbara interests, or your beliefs?
Who wants to write the same story as everyone else? Who wants to follow the same dream as everyone else?
Must we unify in having an identical dream the American dream, say instead of unifying in the fact that we do all have dreams, even if they may be wildly different? I lpve really find these stories “disturbing. It is limiting, it is hateful, and it is boring as all heck.
Society, evolution, and biology together form a giant factory attempting to churn out the same types of people over and over. We So Seldom Look on Love is the story sepdom those who, through some error in the system, didn’t turn out the same. And so I, at last, come to my rating, my 3 stars. I would not call this collection disturbing but I certainly would call it depressing. I have come to the realization that you should never read a short story collection from the gkwdy author unless that author is a speculative writer e.
Because while the characters in We So Seldom Look on Love aren’t the same ,ove the ‘normal’ person, they are the same in their lack of sameness.
That is, every story in this collection is essentially the same story. The emotional footprint is identical. The ebb and flow of foreshadowing, conflict, rising action, etc are identical.

Now we’re located in Sherbrooke and in Hull, there are two on the south shore in Longueuil and Brossard, two on the north shore, one in St. With the new store in Ville La Salle, a western suburb, we’ve completely surrounded Montreal! We knew the times were bad during the recession, so we positioned ourselves for growth, advertised more and grew fast. We have always been aggressive, we don’t sit down braault wait for something to happen.
When the bargains are there we make martibeau happen. The medium to high end 45, square foot stores reflect the Brault and Martineau philosophy. And since we work entirely with a room setting concept, we need an abundance of space.
For example, we put a sofa, a loveseat, a chair, occasional tables, lamps, a bookcase all together– a room to go, one price for all. Rt each store we have 40 livingroom settings, 50 kitchen settings, and 36 bedroom settings.
Our bedroom vignettes are even equipped with sheets! In order to control delivery time and shipping martinneau, most of his suppliers are based in Quebec, some in Ontario.
Willie explains, “It helps to keep our prices lower. Longevity of any group of items is also controlled. If it doesn’t sell well, we discontinue promptly. Appliances are mqrtineau “packaged”, in sets of four. And the same technique relates to electronics, “Televisions are matched with video tape recorders.
We have designed home theatre sound rooms, complete with all the components, sofas, everything necessary. And we have now incorporated well conceived, up-to-date home office settings which we know will be increasingly important to our customers. In leather we are going more and more to earth tones, to tans, although there’s still some aubergine and green. We like fashion colors, too, we’re a little bit more European in our preferences. Brault and Martineau advertise heavily throughout the flysr.
We use radio with frequent vlyer on the weekends. Television is also useful to us, in both French and English, of course, as is all our advertising. Every time without exception when we mount a promotion with flyers we see business coming in. We schedule one flyer in the spring and one in the fall, then two more in the summertime. Willie feels that martibeau are also important to maintain excitement. There are routine fall and anniversary sales, and drawings are held for prizes such as foyer screen televisions.
Recently, consumers were tempted to “Come Join The Races! The names of 72 lucky winners were drawn from in-store customers who entered the competition. There, seated at nine numbered tables of eight marfineau with the first nine “Blue Bonnet” races, they each drew numbers from one to eight corresponding to a specific horse which became their horse for the race.

Every customer attending the event was guaranteed a prize, recliners, mattresses, VCR’s microwave ovens, radios, and stereo systems. Willie credits Robert Gautier, Vice President, with the conceptualization of the event.
Said Willie, “It really works! Such occasions increase traffic and they are exciting to our customers. We like it too because we feel we’re giving back something to the people. All the store managers martinneau and relationships are built. People get to know one another, loyalty develops, the people are happy with their evening and with the ft they have won and they tell their friends. This again increases traffic.
We have had a different event each year. Last year we held our party at a big restaurant on the south shore, dinner and dancing, and at the end of the evening no one wanted to go home! Willie fell in love with the business 30 years ago.
Then a student, he worked as a salesman for Brault and Martineau during vacations. Although he won his degree in heating and refrigeration, he wanted “to be with the public”. He was rapidly promoted from salesman to assistant manager, “always consistently up”, to manager, to buyer, to vice president.
But with typical joie de vivre, he believes strongly in using his free time productively as well. And I enjoy traveling, too, particularly in Europe. Where will his magic wand point next? So, we’ll build a new store right in front of the old one. Also 45, square feet, of course!
Barrie Flyers and Deals –
We are looking forward to a good year in for sure. When people have confidence in the economy, they buy. And we are very aggressive, so business should be good. When business projections are complex we always look very closely before we move.

Lists with This Book. This book is not yet featured on Listopia. He was a real pervert and sick person.
You definitely have to read it for a deeper understanding of his psyche. Mar 04, Zauberlehrling! I found this book from the s in my moms bookshelf and began to read.
At the beginning I was really shocked; later only bored of Kinskis harlotry. What I like about the book is, that Kinski have lived in Berlin and Munich and write about it.
I like to read about places that I joined. Great interpretation of classic material. Klaus Kinskis emotional and sometimes dark performance is unique and fascinating. Some of the best midranges I’ve heard, and I’ve heard many. Sound is well-rounded and detailed without harshness or objectionable distortion at high levels. And yet robust – they can take some low-frequency abuse I ordered this unit as the driver unit for a Bill Fitzmaurice Designs Wedgehorn 6 monitor speaker, although not strictly related too the quLit of the unit, I think it’s important to mention that Thomann are vital to us hobbyist speaker builders in that they stock Eminence and other driver units at decent prices.
I’ve used eminence 10″‘ 12″ and 10″ neodymium units in a variety of designs and not alphx a problem with any of them so far and they’ve all taken a fairly harsh hammering in our bands PA. Packaging is fairly basic but protective of the speaker inside, it might be helpful if A6 provided some reference to their own speaker building guidance in the carton but I guess the assumption as is that if you order a bare driver unit, you know what you are doing.
